Word and Idiom Entry

This is the central subject area of the Vocabulary Discoverer screen. It shows a root word or idiom in the current language. (An idiom is a common phrase in a language and whose meaning is sometimes difficult to understand from the words that make it up. An example in English is "to have to". The meaning of "must" is not obvious just from the words being used. For this reason Lexis Rex has included these idioms as entries in their own right.) Other areas of the screen are based on this root entry: the word's meaning, the word's derivatives or inflections and the example sentences.

All the words in the vocabulary are ordered by their frequency of usage, from the most common words to the least common. Shown is the 100th most common word in the French language. Knowing how common or rare a word is helps you to structure your learning so you are not wasting too much time on words that you will rarely come across. You can navigate from one word to the other by pressing the purple arrow buttons.

You can tick the check box as shown above to indicate that you know this word well. This gets reflected on various areas in the rest of the screen: the Progress Chart will be updated, the word's position in the Word Map will be colored and the word and its derivatives will be colored in any sentences that include it. This way you can see at a glance your progress with time, the amount and pattern of your vocabulary knowledge and the words in a sentence you know and don't know.

The Word Entry also allows you to add the word to a Flash Card set using the card button. The Flash Card set will automatically be opened in the Flash Card Creator for further editing.

If the word has an associated audio track a speaker button will appear so you can listen to the pronunciation. If you add words with audio to a Flash Card set using the card button the audio is also included for the card. In this way you can learn to recognise words by sound as well as sight.
